Evening Lecture – Belgian national policy on radioactive waste, or the recent progress and advances in the final disposal of low-level radioactive waste (cat A)

On June 23, 2006, the Federal Council of Ministers decided that category A waste would be disposed of in a surface disposal facility in the municipality of Dessel, which borders on the municipality of Mol. ONDRAF/NIRAS was ordered to further develop the integrated disposal project and to obtain the required licenses.
ONDRAF/NIRAS has submitted a license application for the construction of the disposal facility to FANC. Building and environmental license applications have been submitted as well. Several auxiliary buildings have been granted their licenses and are being constructed on the Dessel/Mol site at this time. These include a prefab concrete installation (caisson factory) and the production facility of the disposal packages (IPM, Installation for the Production of Monoliths).
This lecture will give an overview of the history of the project, its technical design and its societal aspects. It will focus on recent steps in licensing procedures and ongoing construction works on site.
